Geography Field Trip to Birmingham

Posted: 28/03/2014

On Thursday 27th March, thirty-six A2 and IBDP HL Geographers embarked on a field trip to Birmingham. Pupils were set to work straight away as they completed a study of decline and redevelopment along the A38 corridor. Many of them travel this route on a regular basis but were unaware of how to relate it to Geography.

In Birmingham they were given a presentation and walking tour of the Lee Bank/Park Central area by a representative from Optima Community Association, a Housing Association. his was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to see redevelopment in action and they asked some very perceptive questions.

In the afternoon, pupils looked at urban conservation and ecosystems in the Jewellery Quarter before completing a walking tour of central Birmingham covering sites such as Millennium Point, the Bull Ring, Symphony Hall and Brindley Place. Pupils also visited the new Library of Birmingham and took in the views across Birmingham from the Discovery Terrace. This also allowed them to see how far they had walked on the field trip.

The day allowed pupils to put the theory from lessons, into reality and develop case studies which hopefully will be useful in the final A2/IBDP examination. Also, it enabled pupils to see that Geography is all around them.
